What is amethyst?

An amethyst is a type of semi-precious gemstone belonging to the quartz family. It is prized for its purple colouration ranging from pale lilac to deep violet, and is known for being the birthstone of February.

Why is amethyst purple?

Amethyst appears purple due to the presence of iron impurities within the quartz crystal lattice. This unique composition gives amethyst its distinctive hue, making it highly sought after in the world of gemstones.

Where is amethyst found?

Amethyst was once rare, mainly found in Russia until the 19th century. However, the discovery of large deposits in Brazil during that time led to its widespread availability. Today, Africa and South America are key sources of amethyst.

History of amethyst

In ancient times, amethyst was believed to possess protective qualities, warding off intoxication and promoting clarity of mind. This belief led to its association with sobriety and wisdom, making it a symbol of royalty and nobility. Its name, ‘amethyst’, is derived from the Greek word ‘amethystos’, meaning ‘not intoxicated’. According to Greek mythology, the gemstone was created when the goddess Diana turned a young maiden named Amethyst into quartz to protect her from the advances of Bacchus, the god of wine.
